Science Graduate program frequently asked questions

What roles are on offer to graduates this year?

Positions for the Science Graduate program are advertised in June 2017 from the Science Graduate program page.  In past years we have had positions in Animal Health & Welfare, Agronomy, Emergency Management, Meat & Wool Services and Biosciences Research.

Where will I be based throughout the program?

As a graduate you may have a number of placements to different locations throughout the duration of the program. The position you apply for may determine the location of your rotation. Generally they are regionally based within Victoria, however there are some roles within the  Melbourne Central Business district.

What training will I undertake during the program?

Mandatory training is provided to first year graduates in presentation skills, and to second year graduates in facilitation and transition skills workshops. There is also a personal learning and development budget which graduates can nominate relevant courses or conferences to attend for their future career development.

Can I complete my degree and work for the graduate program?

You must have a conferred undergraduate degree prior to commencing in the program.

I have a TAFE certificate. Can I apply for the program?

No, any position offered by the Graduate Program requires a minimum of an undergraduates degree (completed within the last five years) in the field specified in the position description.

Do I need an Australian qualification?

If your degree is from an international university it should be certified that it meets Australian equivalent prior to submitting your application.  The Office of Overseas Skills Recognition is able to assess your qualifications. There is a fee-for-service charge and a certificate of equivalence must be provided at the time of application.

Do I need to be an Australian citizen?

Applicants must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or a New Zealand citizen who has entered Australia on a valid passport and holds a work permit or visa.

What is the duration of the Science Graduate program?

The duration of the Science Graduate Program is two years.

What is the salary of the science graduate?

Graduates are appointed to a salary of VPS Grade 2.1.6 for the duration of the two year program.

What happens when I finish the program?

On successful completion of the graduate program, graduates progress to a VPS Grade 3 or equivalent science classification level.

What support do I get throughout the program?

You will have a coordinating supervisor and location supervisor who will support and oversee your professional development throughout the program.
