West Gate Tunnel to bring 6000 new jobs

Published: 3 April 2017

The West Gate Tunnel Project has taken a step forward with a design and builder now selected. A consortium headlined by John Holland and CPB Contractors has been selected to build the West Gate Tunnel Project.

The design now includes Victoria's longest road tunnel - at 4 kilometres -  which will become the vital new alternative to the West Gate Bridge, slashing travel times from the western suburbs, Geelong, and Ballarat.

The project will create 6,000 new jobs, including 500 apprentices, up to 150 jobs for former auto workers, and around 400 jobs in Melbourne's west.

The two three-lane tunnels, second river crossing, and new freeway above Footscray Road will be built using 93 per cent local content, with around 92 per cent local steel – creating jobs across the supply chain.
