International visitor survey results

The annual average increase in international visitor numbers to Victoria since 2011 is 8.8 per cent The latest international visitor survey results show international visitors are continuing to enjoy all that Victoria has to offer. The results for the year ending June 2016 show:

  • international visitors to regional Victoria increased strongly by 21.2 per cent
  • Melbourne experienced strong year-on-year growth in international spend (+19.7 per cent) and visitors (+12.6 per cent)
  • international visitor expenditure in regional Victoria increased by 8.4 per cent.

In the year June 2016 there were 2.6 million visitors, 58.8 million nights spent and $6.7 billion total spent by international visitors to Victoria Total expenditure by international visitors in 2014-15 was $5.7 billion, which increased to $6.7 billion in 2015-16. This translates to an increase of 18.9 per cent from one year to the next.

Tourism is a significant economic driver for Victoria. In 2014-15 tourism in Victoria was estimated to be worth $21.7 billion to the economy and employed approximately 210,400 people.
