Economic briefing note on gross value added by industry in June 2016

In the June quarter 2016, national gross domestic product (GDP) grew by $2205 million (up 0.5 per cent). This increase was driven by increases in professional services, which grew by $756 million (up 3.2 per cent), and finance, which grew by $500 million (up 1.3 per cent). These increases were partially offset by decreases in mining, which fell by $1365 million (down 3.5 per cent), and agriculture, which fell by $333 million (down 3.8 per cent).

In the year to June quarter 2016, the largest growth in gross value add has been in mining, up $3117 million (9.0 per cent), finance, up $1898 million (5.3 per cent), and public admin, up $1116 million (5.1 per cent). 

This chart shows the gross value add by industry in the top 6 industries in June 2016 between June quarter 2006 and June quarter 2016, in billions of dollars. In June quarter 2016 the top 6 industries by gross value add were the Finance, Mining, Construction, Health Care, Professional services, and Manufacturing industries. The Finance industry's gross value add in June quarter 2006 was $24.8 billion. Gross value add in Finance has trended upwards since the June quarter 2006 and sits at $37.8 billion in June quarter 2016.  The Mining industry's gross value add in June quarter 2006 was $19.9 billion. Gross value add in Mining trended upwards between June quarter 2006 and March quarter 2016, when it reached $39.0 billion. Gross value add in the mining industry declined in the June quarter 2016 and sits at $37.6 billion.  The Construction industry's gross value add in June quarter 2006 was $22.4 billion. Gross value add in Construction trended upwards between June quarter 2006 and March quarter 2016, when it reached $32.5 billion. Gross value add in the Construction industry declined in the June quarter 2016 and sits at $32.2 billion. The Health Care industry's gross value add in June quarter 2006 was $18.0 billion. Gross value add in Health Care has trended upwards since the June quarter 2006 and sits at $27.7 billion in June quarter 2016. The Professional services industry's gross value add in June quarter 2006 was $18.8 billion. Gross value add in Professional services has trended upwards since the June quarter 2006 and sits at $24.7 billion in June quarter 2016. The Manufacturing industry's gross value add in June quarter 2006 was $26.3 billion. Gross value add in Manufacturing has trended downwards since the June quarter 2006 and sits at $24.5 billion in June quarter 2016.
