Economic briefing note on employment by industry in November 2016

In the November quarter 2016, Victorian total employment (by industry) increased by 35,500 workers. Employment increased in 11 out of 19 industries.

The industries that experienced the largest increases in employment in the November quarter 2016 were manufacturing (up 30,900 workers), followed by retail trade (up 14,600 workers), and health care (up 12,300 workers).

The industries that experienced the largest declines in employment in the November quarter 2016 were professional services (down 17,700 workers), followed by wholesale trade (down 14,800 workers), and arts and recreation (down 9800 workers).

The largest employing industries in Victoria were, as at the November quarter 2016, health care (402,400 workers), retail trade (324,800 workers), and manufacturing (305,100 workers). These three industries employed 33.5 per cent of workers in Victoria in the November quarter 2016.

In the year to the November quarter 2016, Victorian total employment (by industry) increased by 89,400 workers. Employment increased in 11 of the 19 industries. 

In the year to the November quarter 2016, the top three industries for job creation in Victoria were manufacturing (up 42,500 workers), education (up 37,400 workers), and health care (up 29,100 workers). 

The largest declines in employment over the same period were in the retail trade (down 19,000 workers), wholesale trade (down 18,400 workers), and construction (down 15,400 workers) industries.

Number of employees in top six industries in Victoria

This is a chart of employment in the top 6 employing industries in Victoria in the November 2016 quarter, Health Care had 402,379 employees, Retail Trade had 324,776 employees, Manufacturing had 305,076 employees, Education had 265,208 employees, Professional Services had 256,264 employees, and Construction had 251,572 employees.   In the November 2011 quarter, Health Care had 326,622 employees, Retail Trade had 302,352 employees, Manufacturing had 290,216 employees, Education had 216,434 employees, Professional Services had 220,729 employees, and Construction had 260,737 employees.   In the November 2006 quarter, Health Care had 264,674 employees, Retail Trade had 269,148 employees, Manufacturing had 305,190 employees, Education had 196,476 employees, Professional Services had 186,298 employees, and Construction had 230,797 employees.   Between November 2006  and November 2011 and between November 2011 and November 2016  respectively, employment in; * Health Care grew by 23.4 per cent and then grew by 23.2 per cent * Retail Trade grew by 12.3 per cent and then grew by 7.4 per cent * Manufacturing fell by -4.9 per cent and then grew by 5.1 per cent * Education grew by 10.2 per cent and then grew by 22.5 per cent * Professional Services grew by 18.5 per cent and then grew by 16.1 per cent * Construction grew by 13.0 per cent and then fell by -3.5 per cent
