Economic briefing note on employment by industry in November 2016

In the November quarter 2016, Victorian total employment (by industry) increased by 35,500 workers. Employment increased in 11 out of 19 industries.
The industries that experienced the largest increases in employment in the November quarter 2016 were manufacturing (up 30,900 workers), followed by retail trade (up 14,600 workers), and health care (up 12,300 workers).
The industries that experienced the largest declines in employment in the November quarter 2016 were professional services (down 17,700 workers), followed by wholesale trade (down 14,800 workers), and arts and recreation (down 9800 workers).
The largest employing industries in Victoria were, as at the November quarter 2016, health care (402,400 workers), retail trade (324,800 workers), and manufacturing (305,100 workers). These three industries employed 33.5 per cent of workers in Victoria in the November quarter 2016.
In the year to the November quarter 2016, Victorian total employment (by industry) increased by 89,400 workers. Employment increased in 11 of the 19 industries.
In the year to the November quarter 2016, the top three industries for job creation in Victoria were manufacturing (up 42,500 workers), education (up 37,400 workers), and health care (up 29,100 workers).
The largest declines in employment over the same period were in the retail trade (down 19,000 workers), wholesale trade (down 18,400 workers), and construction (down 15,400 workers) industries.
