Economic briefing note on motor vehicle sales in August 2016

New motor vehicle sales in Victoria grew by 2.1 per cent to 27,668 vehicles in the month to August 2016. This change was driven by increases in the sales of sports utility vehicles (SUV's), up 4.2 per cent (with 10,599 vehicles sold), and passenger vehicles, up 1.4 per cent (with 11,796 vehicles sold) since July 2016. Sales of other vehicles* were down 0.5 per cent (with 5274 vehicles sold) since July 2016.

Nationally, new motor vehicle sales grew by 0.1 per cent to 97,929 vehicles in the month to August 2016. This change was driven by an increase in the sale of sports utility vehicles (SUV's), up 2.2 per cent (with 37,552 vehicles sold) since July 2016. Sales of passenger vehicles and other vehicles* were down 1.3 per cent (with 39,520 vehicles sold), and 1.0 per cent (with 20,856 vehicles sold) respectively.

Among the states Victoria experienced the greatest increase in car sales, up 574 vehicles (or 2.1 per cent ) in the month to August 2016. Over the same period, Western Australia experienced the greatest decrease in car sales, down 388 vehicles (or 4.5 per cent).

Victoria's share of national new motor vehicle sales in the month to August 2016 was 28.3 per cent (up from 27.7 per cent in the month to July 2016).

Victoria and Australia have followed similar trends over this period. 20,700 new vehicles were sold in Victoria in the month to August 2006. Between August 2006 and January 2008, new vehicle sales trended upwards to a high of 23,700 new vehicles sold in the month to January 2008. Between January 2008 and March 2009 sales of new vehicles then declined to a low of 18,400 vehicles sold in the month to March 2009. New vehicle sales then peaked in the month to April 2010, trending upwards between March 2009 and April 2010 to reach a high of 26,300 vehicles sold in the month to April 2010. Between April 2010 and May 2011 new vehicle sales in Victoria trended downwards to a low of 19,200 vehicles sold in the month to May 2011. Since May 2011, new vehicle sales in Victoria have trended upwards, with 27,700 sales in the month to August 2016. 80,700 new vehicles were sold in Australia in the month to August 2006. Between August 2006 and November 2007, new vehicle sales trended upwards to a high of 90,600 new vehicles sold in the month to November 2007. Between November 2007 and March 2009 sales of new vehicles declined to a low of 70,900 vehicles sold in the month to March 2009. New vehicle sales then peaked in the month to April 2010, trending upwards between March 2009 and April 2010 to reach a high of 92,900 vehicles sold in the month to April 2010. Between April 2010 and May 2011, new vehicle sales in Australia trended downwards to a low of 75,900 vehicles sold in the month to May 2011. Since May 2011, new vehicle sales in Australia have trended upwards with 97,900 sales in the month to August 2016.

This chart shows the number of motor vehicle sales in Victoria by the three categories of vehicle sold, SUV's, passenger vehicles, and other vehicles. This chart uses a unit of thousands and shows sales of motor vehicles between the month to August 2006 and the month to August 2016. 13,900 passenger vehicles were sold in Victoria in the month to August 2006. Between August 2006 and May 2008, passenger vehicle sales trended upwards to a high of 15,200 passenger vehicles sold in the month to May 2008. Between May 2008 and March 2009 sales of passenger vehicles then trended downwards, to a low of 11,600 vehicles sold in the month to March 2009. Passenger vehicle sales then peaked in the month to April 2010, trending upwards between March 2009 and April 2010 to reach a high of 16,200 vehicles sold in the month to April 2010. Passenger vehicle sales then trended downwards between April 2010 and May 2011, to a low of 11,600 vehicles sold in the month to May 2011. Between May 2011 and September 2012, passenger vehicle sales trended upwards to 14,400 vehicles sold in the month to September 2012. Since September 2012, passenger vehicle sales have trended downwards, with 11,800 sales in the month to August 2016.   3,200 SUV's were sold in Victoria in the month to August 2006. Between August 2006 and January 2008, SUV sales trended upwards to a high of 4,700 SUV's sold in the month to January 2008. Between January 2008 and November 2008 sales of SUV's then declined to a low of 3,000 vehicles sold in the month to November 2008. SUV sales then peaked in the month to April 2010, trending upwards between November 2008 and April 2010, to reach a high of 6,100 vehicles sold in the month to April 2010. Between April 2010 and May 2011, SUV sales then trended downwards, to a low of 4,100 vehicles sold in the month to May 2011. Since May 2011, SUV sales have trended upwards, with 10,600 sales in the month to August 2016. 3,600 other vehicles were sold in Victoria in the month to August 2006. Between August 2006 and April 2008, other vehicle sales trended upwards to a high of 4,400 other vehicles sold in the month to April 2008. Between April 2008 and February 2009 sales of other vehicles then declined to a low of 3,200 vehicles sold in the month to February 2009. Other vehicle sales then trended upwards between February 2009 and December 2009 to reach a high of 5,300 vehicles sold in the month to December 2009.
