Motor vehicle sales for Victoria and Australia

New motor vehicle sales in Victoria fell by 2.3 per cent to 26,036 vehicles sold in the month to May 2016. This change was driven by a decrease in the sale of other vehicles*, down 4.5 per cent since April 2016 (with 4994 vehicles sold). Sales of passenger vehicles and sports utility vehicles (SUV's) were respectively down by 2.7 per cent (with 11,097 vehicles sold) and down by 0.7 per cent (with 9945 vehicles sold) since April 2016.

Nationally, new motor vehicle sales fell by 1.1 per cent to 95,855 vehicles sold in the month to May 2016. This change was driven by the sale of passenger vehicles, down by 3.0 per cent (with 39,607 vehicles sold), and other vehicles , down by 1.7 per cent (with 20,473 vehicles sold), and was partially offset by the sale of sports utility vehicles (SUV's), up by 1.4 per cent (with 35,775 vehicles sold).

South Australia experienced the greatest increase in car sales, up by 4.2 per cent (or 241 vehicles), in the month to May 2016. Over the same period, Victoria experienced the greatest decrease in car sales, down 2.3 per cent (or 616 vehicles).

Victoria's share of national new motor vehicle sales in the month to May 2016 was 27.2 per cent (down from 27.5 per cent in the month to April 2016).

New vehicle sales

This chart shows the number of new motor vehicles sales in Victoria and Australia between May 2006 and May 2016. Victoria and Australia have followed similar trends over this period, with Victoria experiencing a higher rate of growth since May 2011. 20,100 new vehicles were sold in Victoria in the month to May 2006. Between May 2006 and January 2008, new vehicle sales trended upwards to a high of 23,700 new vehicles sold in the month to January 2008. Between January 2008 and March 2009 sales of new vehicles then declined  to a low of 18,500 vehicles sold in the month to March 2009. New vehicle sales then peaked in the month to April 2010, trending upwards between March 2009 and April 2010 to reach a high of 26,300 vehicles sold in the month to April 2010. Between Aril 2010 and May 2011 new vehicle sales in Victoria trended downwards to a low of 19,200 vehicles sold in the month to May 2011. Since May 2011, new vehicle sales in Victoria have trended upwards, with 26,200 sales in the month to May 2016. 80,000 new vehicles were sold in Australia in the month to May 2006. Between May 2006 and November 2007, new vehicle sales trended upwards to a high of 90,600 new vehicles sold in the month to November 2007. Between November 2007 and March 2009 sales of new vehicles declined to a low of 70,900 vehicles sold in the month to March 2009. New vehicle sales then peaked in the month to April 2010, trending upwards between March 2009 and April 2010 to reach a high of 92,900 vehicles sold in the month to April 2010. Between April 2010 and May 2011, new vehicle sales in Australia trended downwards to a low of 75,900 vehicles sold in the month to May 2011. Since May 2011, new vehicle sales in Australia have trended upwards with 96,200 sales in the month to May 2016.

Between April 2010 and May 2011, SUV sales then trended downwards, to a low of 4,100 vehicles sold in the month to May 2011.
