Food and fibre
As Australia's largest food and fibre exporter, Victoria accounts for 26 per cent of Australian food and fibre exports, while accounting for just 3 per cent of the total landmass. In 2015-16, our state's total food and fibre exports were valued at $11.9 billion and accounted for 81 per cent of Australia's dairy exports, 48 per cent of horticultural exports and 38 per cent of prepared food exports.
The challenge is to keep up with rapidly changing and competitive markets here and abroad, with global population growth fuelling increased demand for high volume, high-quality and market-specific products.
Keeping up means more Victorian food and fibre businesses will need to find ways to add value to their products, ramp up production levels and adapt to meet consumer requirements.
Improving infrastructure, supporting regional communities, and helping small to medium businesses in the sector reduce costs while finding new ways to innovate are key parts of our strategy to ensure Victoria's food and fibre businesses continue to thrive well into the future.
The state's strengths include:
- Australia's food and fibre capital and the major gateway to international markets, with sector accounting for almost 30 per cent of national food and fibre exports.
- Nearly half of Victoria's top 100 exporters are from the food and fibre sector, and eight of Victoria's top 10 food and fibre export markets are in Asia, with China the largest.
- Strong international reputation for food safety and biosecurity systems.
