Melbourne shows off design and innovation

From high density living to life-changing Australian innovations, the first Melbourne Design Week presented by the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) is primed to explore the value of design in Victoria from 16 to 26 March.

Newly designed outdoor garden space showing a paved area, a vegetable garden, raised brick steps for an outdoor auditorium and a large glass wall in the background with green artwork on it.The program will showcase both local and international design innovators. Expect talks by leading design experts, design-focused exhibitions, tours, panel discussions and industry events which will be held at NGV Internationaland partner venues throughout the city.

During the week, 15 businesses across Victoria will open their doors to the public to reveal how they have used design to transform how they work and add value to their business. Called "Open State", this new initiative is presented in partnership with Open House Melbourne.

This program is part of the Victorian Government's strategy to strengthen the state's growing design industry which directly employs over 85,000 people and generates revenues of $5 billion annually including an estimated $400 million in design-related exports.
