Melbourne Writers Festival competition – My place in Melbourne

Published: 31 August 2017

Study Melbourne partnered with Melbourne Writers Festival in August to host international student storytelling competition, My Place in Melbourne.

This was the second annual partnership with MWF, which encouraged international students to share their stories and experiences with the public at a major Victorian cultural event. The competition also celebrated the contributions that Victoria's 195,000 international students make to our state.

Director of International Education, Amanda Pickrell, congratulated the winning students at an awards ceremony on Saturday 26 August, attended by MWF Director Lisa Dempster at ACMI, Federation Square.

Eighteen international students were shortlisted for awards in five categories: English Language Training, Vocational Education and Training, Higher Education, Visual and People's Choice. More than 2,300 people voted for the People's Choice Award, which went to Joel Jebamani Murugiah from Malaysia.

All shortlisted stories are available on the Study Melbourne website, along with video interviews with the winning students. This content will be amplified to Study Melbourne's vast global social media community over the coming months.
