Bringing Western Bulldogs to Ballarat

Published: 15 August 2017

This Saturday 19 August, the Western Bulldogs will play their first AFL game at Eureka Stadium. The clash is set to attract thousands of visitors to the region and provide economic benefits far beyond the footy field.

Over the coming years, AFL Premiership matches will bring visitors from all over the state and the nation, meaning more jobs, more spending in local cafes and motels and a stronger local economy.

The game has been possible through the Victorian Government's $21 million redevelopment of Eureka Stadium. The project is supporting more than 30 construction jobs, and once complete the precinct will attract an extra 21,000 visitors to Ballarat each year – increasing annual tourism spending in the city by up to $3.6 million.

The Eureka Stadium project has a reoriented and resized playing field, installed new light towers at the main oval and North Oval 2, built a new grandstand, and made improvements to the existing social club facilities.

Ray Neville - Lifelong Bulldogs fan

Well, I live here locally in Ballarat.

[Vision:  AFL players training]

I've barracked for the Bulldogs for about 45 years now.

[Vision:  AFL players cheering win]

To be a Bulldog supporter and to win the grand final, yeah, I can tell you was a very emotional experience especially like having barracked for them for so long and being close in the preliminary finals over the years.  And then to win one, look, as a supporter, you know, it was great to experience that.

[Vision:  Time lapse of construction of Eureka Stadium]

So I've been keeping an eye on the building of Eureka Stadium.  They've ripped it all up and they spent a lot of money on it.

And now, all of a sudden we're looking out the window here and we can see seats and stands and that all taking shape.

For the Bulldogs to be playing at the Eureka Stadium this year will be fantastic.  I think a lot of people from South Australia will come over here.

[Vision:  AFL fans cheering]

And we're hoping for as many as we can fit in the stadium.

The timing couldn't be any better.

We're playing in Ballarat in 17 and we'll be the reigning premiers.
