Connecting Victoria

Digital connectivity is fundamental to economic and social development, it creates opportunities and reduces costs created by geographic and other barriers to social and economic activity.

Many people living in rural and regional Victoria have a different digital experience to those in the city. In some areas, it can be challenging to do business, access information, make mobile phone calls or use tools for education or lifestyle such as social media or video calls.

To help address the digital divide between regional Victoria and metropolitan areas, the Victorian Government is undertaking significant investment in improving digital connectivity in regional Victoria. The regional digital infrastructure investments include:

  • $33 million for mobile black spot removal (attracting a $129 million infrastructure investment with funding also from the Australian Government, mobile carriers, local government and other third parties)
  • $18 million for the Regional Rail Connectivity
  • $45 million for the Connecting Regional Communities Program
  • $16.4 million to improve digital connectivity for regional schools.

The Victorian Government is already fixing mobile blackspots in communities with no or poor mobile coverage by building 166 new mobile towers, fixing mobile connectivity on our five busiest regional rail routes, improving digital connectivity for regional schools and free public WiFi in Ballarat and Bendigo.

These projects will help ensure improved digital connectivity in regional Victoria because Victorians deserve to have access to the same digital services no matter where they live.
