Cultural and creative economy

State Library Victoria redevelopment

The State Library Victoria will be transformed with a $60.4 million State Government investment. The State Library redevelopment will open up 40 percent more of the iconic building to families, students, researchers and visitors and introduce new facilities and initatives such as Start Space for early-stage entrepreneurs.

Geelong Performing Arts Centre redevelopment

The 38.5 million Geelong Performing Arts Centre redevelopment will transform the Ryrie Street side of the complex with a striking new building that will vastly improve access, amenity and the visitor experience. The project will contribute to Geelong's central business district and will provide new facilities for local creative industries.

Collingwood Arts Precinct

The former Collingwood Technical School site in inner city Melbourne is slated to become a contemporary creative precinct; a home for small and medium creative organisations as well as artists and complementary businesses.

Collections Storage Victoria – Ballarat

The government has allocated $21.4 million for construction of an additional collections storage module in Ballarat for State Library Victoria. In addition to doubling storage capacity, this will include a digitisation facility to ensure that the invaluable state collection is not only safeguarded but made accessible for all Victorians, now and in the future.

Research and analysis

The Tourism, Events and Visitor Economy Branch analyses and collates a range of research and statistics relating to tourism in Victoria. Publications include a range of information, including domestic and international visitation and expenditure, the economic contribution of tourism, tourism forecasts and segment and market profiles.

Tourism excellence

The tourism excellence program has been designed to help tourism businesses and destinations get the best from their workforce, deliver the best possible visitor experience, grow tourism by working together, and ensure a sustainable industry.

Industry crisis resources

The department has developed resources for the tourism industry that provide advice on how to prepare for, respond to, and recover from a crisis event and help counter negative publicity in the event of a crisis.

The final report of the independent inquiry into the labour hire industry and insecure work was tabled in Parliament on 27 October 2016.

Mining and resources

The Stavely Project

The Stavely Project, a collaboration between Geoscience Australia and the Geological Survey of Victoria, is a contribution to the broader UNCOVER Initiative which is being led by the Australian Academy of Science. The initiative seeks to address the challenges of 'greenfield' exploration in Australia through the provision of fundamental geoscience data and concepts.

The CarbonNet Project

The CarbonNet Project is investigating the potential for establishing a world class, large-scale carbon capture and storage network.

Regional development

Ballarat Station precinct redevelopment

The Ballarat Station precinct redevelopment involves the development and operation of an integrated hotel and exhibition/convention centre, including adapting the Heritage Goods Shed and related public space, in partnership with the private sector.

Small business

Small business regulation review

Small Business Victoria is reviewing the regulatory burdens placed on small businesses across the state. Cutting red tape for small businesses supports entrepreneurs and helps business grow, contribute to Victoria's economy and generate new employment opportunities.

Globally connecting business

Trade Victoria provides Victorian exporters with specific services to help them increase exports. These services are aimed at helping business:

  1. Be 'export-ready'
  2. Be connected and competitive in overseas markets
  3. Work directly with potential buyers, clients and business partners in market.

Be 'export-ready' – Export skills program 

The Export skills program provides new exporters with essential education and training to be export-ready. The Victorian Government offers this program through partnerships with various industry associations.

Be connected and competitive in overseas markets - Trade missions 

Victorian businesses are supported through targeted sector-based trade missions that connect exporters with overseas buyers, clients and business partners  – both in key overseas markets (outbound trade missions) and in Victoria (inbound trade missions).

These trade missions showcase Victoria's capabilities in key industries and support exporters through business meetings, networking events , site visits and trade exhibitions.

Work directly with buyers in market - Access program

Victorian exporters can also access international office facilities and business resources as well as in-country expertise and assistance through the 18 Victorian Government Business Offices worldwide.

The international offices are located in the US, Japan, South Korea, Middle East, China, Hong Kong, India and South East Asia and include staff that specialise in trade and market insights for businesses.

Investor migration and global talent attraction 

The Victorian skilled and business migration program brings investment and jobs to Victoria through the attraction of investor and business migrants. The program also attracts high calibre global talent to meet Victoria's ongoing workforce needs in high priority occupations that cannot be accessed locally.

Transport and infrastructure

West Gate Tunnel project

The $5.5 billion West Gate Tunnel project will provide an alternative to the Westgate Bridge, a second river crossing, and direct access to the port.

Monash Freeway upgrade

The Monash Freeway upgrade will improve safety and reliability along the 44 kilometres between Chadstone and Pakenham, extending what is already Australia's longest stretch of managed motorway.

CityLink Tulla widening

The CityLink Tulla Widening project involves adding new lanes and other measures to improve traffic flow across 24 kilometres of freeway between the CityLink tunnels and Melbourne Airport.

Metro Tunnel project

The Metro Tunnel project's twin nine-kilometre tunnels will take two of the busiest rail lines out of the City Loop, creating space for more trains to run more often across Melbourne's rail network and transforming it into an international style metro system.

Level Crossing Removal project

Over the next eight years, the State Government will deliver a coordinated program to remove 50 of the worst level crossings in Melbourne.

Port of Melbourne Port Capacity project

The Port Capacity Project will ensure the Port of Melbourne continues to benefit from the economic advantage of being the main container freight hub of Australia.

Murray Basin Rail Project

The $440 million Murray Basin Rail Project will upgrade Victoria's freight network by standardising and increasing the axle loading of the rail freight lines servicing the north west.

High Capacity Metro Trains Project

The $2.3 billion High Capacity Metro Trains Project is putting 65 bigger, better trains into service on Melbourne's busiest rail line. Suppliers across Victoria are among those beginning major manufacturing from 2018, with the first train ready for passengers on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines from mid-2019 and the 65th train delivered in 2023. The project is resulting in 1,100 local jobs.
